Christians for Romney?

…you bet!

Why are Christians hypocrites to vote against Romney for his religion? Because his religion isn’t much different from Churchianity.

Look at it how you want… morals & behavior-centered teaching, institutionalized religion, clerical systems of pastors—which exist nowhere in the Bible… Do the Mormon handshakes bother you? Visit the local Baptist church without shaking the greeter’s hand and see how long before they give you the boot. Pastoral staff choose which people are in what smallgroups—because they think Christian fellowship is an institution ordained by clergy, not a living Body led by the Spirit.

Mormonism is an American-home-grown religion, after all. Where do you think their got their institutionalist ideas from? They simply changed the required handshake styles.

God’s Church was designed to center on prayer—not reading the same prayer book every morning, nor filling our calendars with events planned by the local Christian bureaucracy, nor shutting our faces to listen to the smartest guy in the room week after week—even though he has a Master’s degree. The Christian community was called to pray.

Kansas City isn’t perfect, but they’ve figured out their center. The Local Church movement reads the late Witness Lee more than they read the Bible, but they know that clergy don’t exist in Scripture. And Barna has astutely noted that many American Christians left Churchianity to get closer to Jesus. From those perspectives, Romney’s religion isn’t too different from established Churchianity.

The American Church is getting close. Yes, Romney’s religion is loaded with baggage—and it’s great that Christians are starting to see the problem of any institutionalized religion. It’s high time that we look in the mirror and pluck the same log that the speck of dust in Romney’s eye came from.
